Job Title: First Mate

Reports To: Director of Marine Transportation

Summary: The First Mate oversees the deck crew on the Beach Shuttle/s, managing day-to-day operations, assisting in navigation, and maintaining the safety of the vessel and all on board. **Pay commensurate with experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Start of day

• The first mate upon arrival will remove mid ship spring lines and the large orange buoys. Then retie bow and stern lines to ensure the boat is secure.
• Once the shuttle is secure and buoys removed, the mate will perform a brief inventory of what is needed for the day. This includes, but not limited to, soft drinks and beer for guests, a minimum of 24 waters for beach attendants, ice, sunscreen, toilet paper, pump out, gas, etc.
• The mate will turn on the battery switches (located port side of captain’s helm) trim down the motors and check the fuel, freshwater, and sewage gauges to ensure we will make it through the whole day. If fuel or water is less than half a tank, we will need to resupply. If sewage is greater than half a tank, we will need to pump out.
• If necessary, the captain will move the shuttle to the marina to resupply. During the commute the mate should ensure cleanliness of the vessel. (i.e. toilet clean and operational, no sand from previous days, no trash in bathroom or deck, general cleanliness)
• Upon arrival at the marina the duties should be split between captain and mate. If there is an inadequate amount of guest products (water, beer, soda) they can be written off in the marina under “Customer charge”. If sunscreen or beach attendant water is needed it will be written under “Shuttle usage”.

During day, Running trips

• Upon loading the shuttle, the mate will stand at the gate and collect lanyards. As well as a head count of every individual. If needed the mate will assist anyone in boarding and/or their belongings.
• After the shuttle is loaded and confirmation from captain is received, the mate will untie the vessel.
• As soon as the vessel is safely away from the dock the mate will begin introductions and the safety briefing.
• Introductions and safety briefing- First the mate will introduce every member of the crew as well as their role for the day. The safety briefing should include life vest and dawning placard locations, hours of operation, room service options, restroom location and operation, special weather, special currents, special events in the harbor.
• After the safety briefing is executed, the mate should continue engaging the guest. Offer to take photos, look for sea life, answering questions, providing information about the area and businesses.
• Before landing the shuttle at the beach the mate needs to confirm our safety corridor is free of swimmers and warn passengers of the “slight bump”.
• Once at the beach the mate will lower the ramp, reintroduce the beach attendants, then go wait behind the bar for drink orders.
• All drink orders will be documented with room number, last name, order, and customer signature.
• After drinks have been supplied to those who need it, the mate will begin loading the vessel. Another head count is required before raising the ramp.
• On the return trip, the mate will continue to engage guests. The mate will provide buttons “first mate” to children and “first boat ride” to anyone it applies. As well as mentioning any harbor activities for the day.
• The mate will confirm all body parts are inside the vessel while approaching the dock. Once to the dock the mate will secure the vessel. The gate should not be unlocked until the vessel is properly secure.
• The mate will instruct departing guests of where dirty towel go and the showers are located.
• Then repeat the process

End of day

• After all guests have been delivered to the dock the mate will begin end of day duties.
• The orange buoy should be placed back alongside the dock. All lines secured (Bow, Stern, 2 Midship Spring lines)
• The trash (bathroom and deck) shall be removed. Then the deck should be washed, removing all sand.
• Finally, the mate will take all food and drink order tickets to Grande Vista to input and close out.

**Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty with confidence. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Multiple years’ experience in boat handling, navigation, with the ability to moor and anchor
• Multiple years’ experience in deck maintenance and safety

Other Qualifications

Availability Open and operational seven days a week. Employee may be asked to work longer days, on the weekends, and over holidays.

License Requirements Valid driver’s license that has been in effect for at least three years, with no major violations and no more than two minor violations in the past three years.

Rules and Regulations All employees must adhere to all safety rules and regulations required by local, State and Federal authorities, wear the appropriate personal protective equipment necessary to perform the job in a safe manner and will follow all safety rules per the Company’s Safety Policy.

Language Skills Must be able to speak, read, write, and comprehend the English language. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

The employee must be able to lift 5-25 pounds regularly and over 25 with assistance, as needed, as part of the daily responsibilities.

• The physical environment requires the employee to work outside in the heat and the possibility of inclement weather. This role is highly physical in nature, caring for equipment in the sand throughout the course of the workday.
