Your Role: High School Science Teacher

As a High School Science Teacher , you will play a pivotal role in preparing students to critically engage with the world of science. You’ll foster self-directed learners through inquiry-based learning, emphasizing student discourse and scientific practices. Your mission? To ignite a passion for scientific questioning and analysis in every student, empowering them to excel in any STEM discipline they choose.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instruction

  • Teach a dynamic curriculum covering Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Sciences, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and collegiate-level coursework.
  • Develop students' skills in questioning, modeling, constructing explanations, data analysis, argumentation, and conducting interactive labs.
  • Create a classroom environment where students feel confident to engage in scientific discourse.
  • Facilitate student-led discussions, encouraging them to use evidence to make sophisticated claims and critique arguments.
  • Guide students through inquiry-based projects and lab performance tasks.
  • Collaborate with the Science department to set academic and engagement goals for students.

2. Data Analysis

  • Meet weekly with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work samples and assessments.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom.

3. School Culture

  • Build positive relationships with students, ensuring they feel seen, loved, and heard.
  • Partner with families to provide the necessary resources for their child's learning needs.
  • Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Participate in weekly school-wide meetings to cultivate community and model our core values.
  • Collaborate with your grade-level team to develop academic goals and instructional strategies.

Qualifications

  • A demonstrated commitment to supporting students’ social-emotional and academic development.
  • An enthusiasm for collaboration with internal and external partners in the best interest of students.
  • A self-directed learner who actively seeks and implements feedback to improve outcomes.
  • Required Experience:
    • 1-2 years of experience impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities preferred.
    • Academic expertise in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher by the start of employment.
    • While certification is not required for hiring, passing state teacher certification tests is necessary to meet MA state requirements.
    • All Commonwealth charter teachers must have an appropriate MA educator’s license or pass required MTELs within the first year of employment.

Compensation

The salary for this role ranges from $57,000 to $89,000 , determined by factors such as relevant teaching experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time teaching experience will likely start at $57,000.
