Overview The Department of Comparative Pathobiology (CPB) supports faculty and staff who teach, conduct research, and provide diagnostic services to the small and large animal hospitals as well as outside organizations. Educational areas of emphasis include Clinical Skills, Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Biochemistry, Organ Systems and Pathophysiology, and Veterinary Pathology. Research areas include reproductive biology, neuroscience, biotechnology, and comparative ocular pathology. Faculty provide anatomic and clinical pathology diagnostic services through the Cummings Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, which supports patient care by the school's hospitals. This position will be in the Comparative Eye Pathology & Oncology Laboratory under Dr. Cornelia Peterson. Dr. Peterson's research focuses on the mechanisms of diseases in the eye and visual system with comparative ocular pathology approaches. The position is a part-time, 50% position (17.5 hours per week). What You'll Do The research histology technician will perform research studies under the supervision of Dr. Peterson. They will maintain the lab, including quality control evaluations, coordinating equipment maintenance, and managing supply needs. Essential functions as a Histotechnologist will be: Perform benchtop and animal experiments under the direction of Dr. Peterson. Laboratory maintenance including ordering, scheduling equipment repair and maintenance, maintaining laboratory SOPs, ensuring compliance with university safety and OSHA requirements. Tissue cutting, staining, boxing up slides, loading slides onto scanner, printing cassettes, labeling slides; immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization Training new temporary lab members (e.g., summer students, visiting scholars) What We're Looking For Basic Requirements: Knowledge or experience as typically acquired by: Successful completion of university coursework in sciences (i.e. biology, microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry, or laboratory experience) Proficient in Word and Excel Experience in histotechnology (cutting paraffin-embedded sections, tissue trimming, embedding, routine H&E staining, and special stains) Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of science (e.g., biology, chemistry, etc.) Certified Histotechnician Experience with immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, RNAScope Pay Range Minimum $29.40, Midpoint $35.00, Maximum $40.60 Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
