About The Indiana Department of Insurance

The purpose of the Indiana Department of Insurance is to protect Hoosiers as they purchase and use insurance products to keep their assets and their families from loss or harm. Consumers may need assistance with certain claim situations or just help in understanding how their policies work. Our other primary obligation is to monitor the financial solvency of the insurance companies domiciled in Indiana so that the legal promises made in insurance policies are honored. To these ends, our Department’s staff is committed to providing exceptional customer service for both our consumers and our companies, and to maintain a fair and objective viewpoint as we examine each issue and circumstance within our jurisdiction.

 

Role Overview

The Specialty License Investigator will report directly to the Chief Deputy Commissioner for the Consumer Protection Unit. In this role, you will serve as the lead investigator for complaints and license compliance issues for all specialty licensed or certified individuals and entities under Indiana Code Title 27, including, but not limited to, bail bond and recovery agents, public adjusters, consultants, independent adjusters, and other licensed entities. In addition, you will assist the Enforcement Division by conducting in-depth background investigations on potential applicants seeking licensure or certification from the Department.


Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Examine corporate records, policies, procedures, and treatment of policy holders to determine effectiveness of an insurance company’s or entity’s management and compliance with the insurance code and regulations.
  • Analyze investments and/or insurance transactions for legality, valuation, and proper classification and reporting of income received and accrued.
  • May review classifications and recording of expenses for conformance with prescribed insurance accounting systems.
  • Participate in writing the examination reports or administrative orders.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Thorough knowledge of, and ability to apply, general accounting principles. 
  • Thorough knowledge of insurance accounting and applicable laws.
  • Extensive knowledge of, and ability to apply, examining practices and procedures as used in insurance examining.
  • Broad knowledge of the organization and practices of various types of insurance companies or entities.
  • Broad knowledge of, and ability to apply, provisions of the law governing insurance companies or other insurance entities, related legal opinions and court decision, departmental policies, rules and regulations and insurance industry standards as established by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
  • Considerable knowledge of new insurance practices, trends, developments and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of business and administrative law.
  • Ability to organize and plan work for oneself and others.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data and reach sound conclusions.
  • Ability to prepare clear, complete, and concise reports.
  • Ability to qualify for a fidelity bond.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
